Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:-
Milton belonged to the Puritan age. It is known to all that the Puritan Age was an age of different types of conflicts. Religious and political conflicts were available in the Puritan Age. In Puritan Age, we have seen the extinction of many old ideals. There were also the signs of many new ideals but those new ideals were not vibrant. It is true that the nature and function of English literature were changing in Puritan Age. English literature was passing a transformational period in the Puritan Age. Some classical ideals were trying to emerge in the Puritan Age but this emergence of classical ideals was not natural rather it was artificial.
John Milton was one of the greatest poets of the world. His position in the world of English literature is next to Shakespeare. He is the best Christian humanist of English literature. He fused the cultural spirit of Renaissance with the spirit of Christianity. In the first period of his poetic career, he composed many youthful poems in Latin and English. During the first period of his poetic career, Milton also produced a beautiful pastoral elegy entitled "Lycidas". During the second period of his poetic career, Milton becomes blind but blindness could not suppress his talent, "Paradise Lost", "Paradise Regianed" and "Samson Agonistes" were the products of the last phase of his poetic career. He also used 'blank verse' for his heroic poem. Thematically and technically he became very rich during the last phase of his poetic career.
Milton was a perfect poet. He used the ideals of Neo-classicism very skilfully. He mixed the ideals of Renaissance and the ideals of Reformation
